signing up for broadband

i gave in, finally ordered broadband, will use roadrunner.  hmm, aren't they a time-warner company ?  and isn't that a part of aol ?  so why can't i get some sort of bundle discount ?  well, there are other cable offers in town, including aol, earthlink, etc., but they all have about the same price, may as well go with the local established company.  and since i get no discount for byo modem or wireless, i'm getting the whole shebang.  not cable tv, though.  and they have a voip offering; i may look into that, but since i don't use my landline for voice anyway, what's the point ?  soon, i will be cincinnati bell and at&t free.  and then probably aol free too, at some point.  i have to relocate a few websites & stuff for that, and take care of other things.  perhaps i'll just downgrade the service to the $10 byo access, but it's useful sometimes having aol's global dial-up access bank of local numbers,  but with more and more businesses offering free broadband on premises, maybe that's no longer a need.  except for at the residences of my similarly tech-challenged family members, of course.

what prompted this ?  well, a few days back, my already flaky phone line finally dropped out altogether.  i called the phone company, leery of getting hit with a service call bill since i hadn't bought their in-house service insurance.  turns out to have been a local wirebox issue a couple blocks away, their problem, not mine, so no charge.  but meanwhile, i was thinking it was the line coming through the trees out front that was the problem, and i was just fed up with slowness, and finally no service.

anyway, i'm on dial-up at the moment, and i finally have a clear line.  that's what a solid physical wire connection will get ya.  no excuse not to pay bills now ;-)

so in a week or so, i'll be online, large pipe, and maybe i'll finally put this other box online that's just been sitting here. as in, running my own server.  we'll see.
