You know you're from St.Louis when..

Similar lists exist for Cincinnati and rednecks and they both ring as true as this list --

You Know you're from St. Louis if:

  • You love toasted ravioli with Budweiser beer.
  • "Vacation" is a choice between Silver Dollar City and Lake of the Ozarks.
  • You can find Pestalozzi Street by aroma alone.(the street by the brewery)
  • You can get anywhere in 20 minutes, except on highway 40.
  • You've seen all the biggest bands ten years AFTER they were popular.
  • You can debate for 30 minutes whether Missouri Baking or Marge Amighetti makes the best Italian bread.
  • You know what "Party Cove" is, and where the "lake" is.
  • You still can't believe the Arena is gone.
  • Your first question to a new person is, "Where did you go to High School?"
  • Your non-St. Louisan friends always ask if you're aware there is no "r" in "wash."
  • You know at least one person who's gotten hurt at Johnson Shut-ins.
  • You know in your heart that Mizzou can beat Nebraska in football.
  • You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example: "Where's my coat at?"
  • You think the four major food groups are Beef, Pork, Budweiser and Imo's.
  • You've had to switch from heat to AC in the same day.
  • You know there are really only three salad dressings: Imo's, Zia's and Rich and Charlie's.
  • You'll pay for your kid to go to college unless they want to go to KU.
  • You can't think of anything better than sitting on the porch, in the summer, during a thunderstorm.
  • You would rather have a root canal without anesthetic than drive on Manchester on a Saturday afternoon.
  • It just doesn't seem like a wedding without mostaciolli. AND YOU PRONOUNCE IT 'MUSKACHOLLI'.  The balance of the menu is ham, boiled roast beef, string beans with ham and of course pitchers of Busch Bavarian (class weddings have Bud)
  • You know, within a three-mile radius, where another St. Louisan grew up as soon as they open their mouth.
  • You know what a Pork Steak is...and what kind of sauce to put on it!
  • Everyone in your family has floated the Meramec River at least once.
  • A hoosier is someone that lives just south of Chouteau, not a person from Indiana.
  • You have made fun of Mike Shanahan and tried to imitate him ordering another cold, frosty Busch Bavarian Beer.
  • You have listened to Mike's broadcast on KMOX, while watching the game on TV and wonder what game he is watching. A tear forms in your eye as someone mentions their favorite Jack Buck story.
  • You've ever said, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity."
  • Your favorite summer treat is handed to you upside-down (Ted Drewe's - YUM!)

all right, i saw this, and a lot of it is just general midwest, if not general everywhere. but i gotta admit, what the hell is toasted ravioli, upside down deserts, and this fascination with crap beer ? and this pork steak thingy sounds good. anything like the indiana pork loin thing ?

beyond that, there's a "you know you're from..." list for just about anywhere. wonderful world, eh ? think about an alaskan town, for example. neat.

The pork steak thing caught me by surprise when I got to Cincy. Basically it's meat from a pig (not sure what part) shaped like steaks. BBQ it and smother it in bbq sauce, yum. It's strictly a St.Louis thing I found out. The grocery stores around here have more pork steaks than hamburger, steaks and ribs during the summer time. Actually it tastes like ribs without dealing with all the bones.

Toasted ravioli - ravioli rolled in flour and dropped in hot grease. Really good, also I discovered it's a semi-St.Louis thing as it was finally exported. They sell them in the grocery freezer cases here, many brands, mostly local. Great for late night munchies, pop em in the oven.

St.Louis and beer is like Detroit and cars. It wasn't until the late 70s before we saw Coors and Miller products here. Bud is king. I tried to tell people the great taste of Miller lite, got booed off the stage.

Upside down dessert, total yum. Small ice cream stand owned and operated by a guy named Ted Drewes. They call them "concretes". Mostly its whipped ice cream that sticks to the cup so it doesn't fall out. It's very creamy and very tasty. Never had anything like it, not even DQ is able to match it. Anyway the street in front of the stand is always crowded with cars and people waiting in line. It's turned into a STL tradition somehow. Probably every city has their well known ice creamery (Grators in Cincy?).

surprise at the "localness" of some things, eh ? i suppose that the more we get around, the more we realize just how idiosyncratc some things are.

the same exercise should also reveal "universals" that transcend cultures and geography. i'd like to see a "you don't know you're from anywhere when" list ;-)

I was just talking to a friend about my possibility of moving to Austin. I told him that I was going to have porksteaks imported from StL (there is a company that imports stricly StL foods for us wanderers). I have lived elsewhere and I already know how rare it is to find porksteaks.

My father and stepmother moved down to Huntsville, AL, about 6 years ago when all those Defense places shut down here. They just recently have gotten the butcher down in AL to start selling porksteaks for all the St. Louisans who got transferred there. :)

When I lived in Cincinnati they were proud of their pork history. Pig statues all over. Yet they didn't do pork steaks?! Strange. I had my ceremonial pork steak last Monday (Memorial Day), very good, meat fell right off the bone. Definitely a St.Louis hidden treasure :)

I grew up in st louis all my life and am now in michigan for a brief stint... makes me homesick thanks! haha

can't forget fritz's frozen custard either...I think they put ted drewes to shame.

you can't forget the notorious "so where'd you go to high school" question...cuz from there- they think they know ya.

Oh, and how east st. louis, might confuse a lot of outsiders. cause, it actually is in illinois not, missouri. just thought I'd contribute =)

Fritz's came second so I guess that's why it never gets any recognition? There's actually one right down the street from where I live (Manchester).

East St.Louis should rename itself to something else. Perhaps Hood City or Crimeria ;)

Thanks for the contribution!

The warsh thing really craked me up when I read this. My parents say it all the time and I have to admit, I've said it before. Pork steaks are always at our house and family get togethers. I don't even bother asking what's on the barbecue anymore, it's always pork steaks. Oh my god, Ted Drew's is awesome. I love it. Wow, I'm in college right now and this is really making me miss St. Louis. Go STL!!

Yeah I lived in Cincinnati for 3 years and really missed STL too :) I was constantly made fun of the "warsh" thing in Ohio. Hard habit to break. I called rednecks hooshiers and everyone kept asking me why I thought they were from Indiana. Argh!!

HMMMM. From Illinois right across the river. (no not E St Louis) Never realized the pork steaks was a St Louis thing only. I thought everyone ate them. When we BBQ outside, it is 9 out of 10 times pork steaks.

Samantha.....The thurr and wurrr thing is not a new St Louis area thing. It is just plain retarded and a wannabe ganster thing.

Ted Drewes' is frozen custard not ice cream (which is why Dairy Queen can't do it) and the thurr and wurr thing is not new but has been pronounced that way in the inner city since long before Nelly came along

you know you are from the "lou" when you travel else where and order a St. Paul sandwich from their chop suey restaurant and they have NO clue about what you're referring to!!

This happen to me when I went to Chicago. I was really upset because I had my mouth set on eating a Chicken St. Paul w/ onion, tomato, lettuce & mayo :)
